Diamond grinding and polishing

Diamond grinding and polishing

A floor grinding machine with diamond pads working on a stone floor, followed by polishing. The second photo shows the wet surface during the work. This is the process we use to restore dull, scratched or uneven marble and granite floors, and to finish new floors after installation.

What the work involved

  • Inspection. The floor was checked for level differences, scratches, stains and any damaged areas.
  • Protection. Walls, skirting and doors were covered before wet grinding began.
  • Grinding. Diamond pads were used from coarse to fine, removing scratches and evening out joints between slabs.
  • Polishing. The surface was then polished to an even shine.
  • Clean-up. Slurry was cleared as the work went on and the floor was left clean.

What the photos show

The first photo shows the machine at work and the milky slurry that wet grinding creates, which is why the work is done with water: it keeps dust down and the pads cool. The second shows the wet floor between stages, as the work moves from one stage to the next.

When it is the right choice

Grinding and polishing suits floors in good structural condition that have lost their shine, show scratches or have uneven joints. It is usually quicker and less disruptive than relaying. We inspect first and advise honestly if a floor is too damaged to grind.
